This project was done for an artist named Alex Da Corte who mainly focuses on painting, sculpture, installation, and video. The book's goal was to showcase some of his works and match his overall aesthetic/feel.
The big challenge with this book was understanding Da Corte as an artist. It took me many written and recorded interviews with him to fully grasp the method behind his craft and understand the subtle nuances in the stuff he does. Once I was able to think like Da Corte, the rest of the book assembled itself quite quickly and easily.
The cover is my favorite part of this project as it’s a small inside joke at how his career started; in various diners where he viewed ketchup packets as more than objects, as friends. (Don’t ask me why, that wasn’t part of the mandate…)
Overall, I am quite happy with the outcome. The book looks sleek and allows his work to shine without taking away from it. I kept the book very minimal to let the work do the talking, as his work generally has a voice of its own. Quite literally.
